Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to avoid going out as powerful gusts batter the region.

Powerful winds attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 properties lacking electricity and compelled agencies to halt over 100 aircraft departures, based on regional news sources.

These gusts are impacting the entire southern region and lower areas of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in core zones such as these major districts.

Locals have been advised to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for further power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Measures

This outage appears to be affecting homes mainly in the southern region, although officials say that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into oncoming traffic on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the city have been cancelled due to the winds, whereas certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have announced a crisis declaration, to support disaster response efforts.

Labor Protests During Harsh Conditions

These intense gusts on this day come as many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "significant labor action", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has forced them to alter some of their plans, with several external protests moved indoors or cancelled.

Like conditions are affecting Australia, bringing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Authorities have announced fire bans for fear of wildfires.
